Lisboa

Two days in Europe... disclaimer - for those of you who know Portuguese, sorry the lack of accents, not only am I on an English keyboard but my usual accent shortcuts aren't working...

June 1st, 2005

Breakfast in Rome, Italy
Lunch in Paris, France
Dinner in Lisbon, Portugal

Talk about not knowing what language to speak...but, once we got to Lisbon it was bliss. For the first time on our trip, we BOTH knew exactly what people were saying to us and what we were saying back =o)

After dinner we went for a walk, here are some pics...

Castelo de Sao Jorge (a castle overlooking downtown Lisbon - we would go up the next day).

Rio Tejo e a Ponte 25 de Abril (The bridge over the Tagus River).

This street has a lot of modern shops and outdoor cafes.

A train station.

June 2nd, 2005

Highlights of the Day:

* Riding an old tram down the streets of Lisbon.

* Awesome Pasteis de Nata in Belem (warm custard pastries in a flaky crust, with optional powdered sugar and cinnamon to sprinkle on top). I remembered this place from when I would go to Lisbon with my parents. I remembered the doors and the shop (with the big baking area open for all to see) to be much bigger than it was. I guess I had grown up... BUT, the pastries were still amazing.

The Tower of Belem. This was the the first line of defense of the city of Lisbon.

A replica of the tower. Why pay to go inside the big one, when you can just look in the windows of this one? =o)

* Monumento dos Descobrimentos. This is a monument to the era when Portugal was the leading nation in maritime discoveries.

The monument, with all the important men in the discoveries.

* The castle up on the hill, Castelo de Sao Jorge. On the way up on a tram, we saw these two guys trying to pickpocket these german tourists. One thief had his hand in the tourist's cargo pocket (!). Mark realized what was going on and made a big scene to get everyone's attention. Of course they shot us some dirty looks when they got off the tram. It was quite the adrenaline rushing experience.

Lisbon, from above (at the Castelo).

* Walking into the icy cold Atlantic Ocean on a beach in Cascais, a town outside of Lisbon.
